The Fig Tree offers affordable traditional and contemporary fresh food for all the family.
Opened at the end July 2009, Mike & Sandie opened the Fig Tree with the aim of offering affordable fresh & seasonal food for all the family. A restaurant where you could come in for a light meal such as Pembrokeshire Moules frites when in a rush or on a whim or for a more substantial or formal meal for a special occasion or celebration. We opened the Fig Tree because we found that there was nowhere within the Cardiff area that offered such food.
Mike Caplan, Executive Chef / Owner:
I have worked with food all of my life, leaving school and going straight to catering college and working as a chef and as a waiter at all levels in many fine restaurants. I then trained as a lecturer and taught chefs, waiters and managers in various colleges across south Wales before being seconded to the WDA to set up farmers makets, food festivals and to source the finest ingredients produced in Wales and introduce them to the best chefs and restauratuers in London. This led me to develop friendships with many food producers and chefs across Wales and southern England and I also worked with Rick Stein on his 'Food Heroes' book, introducing him to some Welsh 'Heroes'. Having opened several restaurants for other people I still felt there was a gap for a restaurant offering simple fresh local and seasonal food.
Sandie Guppy, Partner
Brought up in Penarth, Sandie has a varied background in customer service and hospitality and is a lifelong vegetarian. As such she also found it difficult to eat out somewhere where she would have a choice on a menu, especially if she didn't fancy mushroom stroganoff, pasta or goat's cheese. With these thoughts in mind we found our location, a derelict Victorian beach shelter on Penarth Esplanade, overlooking the Bristol channel to Somerset and Devon.
We're not perfect (yet) and we are constantly striving to improve what we do. We value your comments and suggestions.
We are open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm and for dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 6.30pm, last orders are 9.30pm
We also offer a barbecue and bar on our roof terrace at weekends & public/school holidays, weather permitting
Both the restaurant and roof terrace are available for private parties, weddings, christenings etc
